Cooperative research of German experts and the scholars from Terracotta Warriors Museum
For the scientifically understanding of the soil environment of the fragile remains buried at the site, and to make further more effectively protection on the painted terracotta warriors, according to the "German-China Cooperation Agreement on the Protection Techniques of Cultural Heritage", Dr. Mathias Kocher and Ms. Linda Zachmann from Germany's Technical University in Munich, as well as Dr.Uil Meinhardt and Dr. Rupert Utz from Bamberg Cultural Heritage Protection Research Institute, arrived at the Terracotta Warrior museum to make a two-week cooperative research with museum scholars in the pit 2 of Terracotta Warriors museum on March 22nd.
Based on previous researches, the cooperative team investigated the effect of the soil drying on the Terracotta Warriors paint, measured the humidity in the surface layer of pit No.2. and chosed the most effective location to drill to get the soil samples. They also analyzed the data of the previously displayed soil moisture measurement instruments. At the same time, they visited the restoration work on the terracotta figurine
excavated in pit No.1. and discussed the properties of the materials used to restore and bond the terracotta figurines. Finally, they provided some suggestions and advices about these cases and successfully achieved the goal of this cooperation. (Translator: Marie Kerwin)
