Professor Xu obtained his bachelor and master degree from Shandong University. Since 1984 he taught at Shandong University. In 1989 he obtained a diploma from the Archaeologist Training Program of State Cultural Property Bureau. In 1996 he obtained his doctoral degree from the Graduate School, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). Under the supervision of Professor Xu Pingfang, he focused his dissertation on Chinese ancient urbanism. Currently he is deputy director of Department of the Xia-Shang-Zhou Archaeology of Institute of Archaeology, head of the Erlitou Work Team of this institute, Professor of the Department of Archaeology of the Graduate School, CASS, Committee member and Deputy Secretariat of the Chinese Yin-Shang Culture Association.

Professor Xu specializes in archaeology of the Xia-Shang-Zhou period, archaeology of Chinese urbanism. He participated in and then directed the excavations of the Dinggong City Site (Longshan culture) in the Zouping County, the palace complex of the Yanshi City Site (Shang dynasty), directed the survey and excavation of the Erlitou site, and a systematic regional survey of the Luoyang Basin. His current projects are “Excavation of the Palace Complex of the Erlitou Site (a major project of the Institute of Archaeology, CASS)”, “Chinese Ancient Urban Centers (a major project of CASS)”, “the Ancient Natural Environment, the Human Lifestyle and the Development of Civilization in the middle and the lower Yellow River Valley”, “The Erlitou site and the settlements in the vicinity (a part of the project The Origin of Chinese Civilization)”, and “Early Chinese Bronzes (a China-Japan joint project)”.
