A conference on the Paleolithic sites in the Luonan Basin, Shannxi province, was held in Luonan County from 9th to 12th September, 2011, sponsored by the Cultural Relics Bureau of Shannxi Province and organized by the Archaeology Institute of Shannxi Province, People’s Government of Luonan and IVPPCAS (Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of Chinese Academy of Science). There were more than 40 experts attending the conference, who came from IVPPCAS, IACASS (Institute of Archaeology of Chinese Academy of Social Science), Archaeology Institute of Shannxi Province, Peking University, Nanjing University and the Cultural Relics Bureau of Hebei province, etc. They discussed warmly the Paleolithic archaeological fieldwork and researches during the past over 10 years in Luonan Baxin and summarized the achievements.
The opening ceremony was convened by Weilin Wang, the head of the Archaeology Institute of Shannxi Province. And, the seminar and the forum on the Paleolithic archaeology were convened by Xing Gao, the vice-director of IVPPVAS, and Fei Xie, the vice-director of the Cultural Relics Bureau of Hebei Province, respectively. In the seminar, Shejiang Wang, a professor from IVPPCAS, Huayu Lu, a professor from Nanjing University, Chen Shen, from Royal Ontario Museum and Dr. Ying Guan gave a talk successively, titled Excavation and research on the Paleaolithic archaeology in Luonan Basin, Landform, loess stratigraphy and the human being life in the Pleistocene in the middle and upper reaches of the south Luo River, An micro-wear analysis on the function of the Paleolithic lithic tools from Luonan, and An analysis on the residue on the hand axes unearthed from the Zhongxin Zhangyukou site, respectively. Also, they elaborated the current research situation and further research plan on the Paleolithic archaeology in Luonan Basin, and discussed with the delegates. The research team would like to absorb the suggestions from the experts in the conference and push the study on the Paleolithic archaeology in Luonan forward.
Since 1995 when palaeolithic tools were found in Luonan Basin, there have been over 300 Paleolithic archaeological sites found by the Archaeology Institute of Shannxi Province, Luonan Museum, IVPPCAS, Nanjing University, Royal Ontario Museum, Canada, and La Trobe University, Australia. These sites distribute intensively and span from 800,000 years BP to 50,000 years BP. Moreover, both cave site, such as the Huashilang Longyadong site, and open sites are the characters of the Paleolithic sites in Luonan Bansin. So, Luonan has been another research center on the Paleolithic archaeology in China and has highly attracted the attention of the experts inland and outland. In the end, the delegates visited the Zhongxin Zhangyukou site in Luonan Basin, and Professor Shejiang Wang, the leader of the Luonan Basin archaeology team of the Chinese Academy of Science, explained the details of the site.
