Preparatory works for the opening of Cao Cao's tomb are underway, but no timetable for its opening to the public has been set yet, local official said.
Reporters recently visited the tomb located in the Xigaoxue Village of Anyang County and saw many visitors there. However, they were disappointed to find the doors to the tomb shuttered on arrival.
"According to requirements, we are currently working on preparations to open Cao Cao's tomb to the public. We closed the tomb passage to reduce water evaporation and the damage caused by excessive personnel access," a staff member said. He said there is no timetable for the opening of the Cao Cao's tomb to the public.
The excavations of the No. 1 and No. 2 tombs were already completed at the end of 2010, with more than 400 cultural relics unearthed. The provincial archaeologist team has initially restored more than 100 damaged relics.
To enhance the protection of the tomb, the local government has established the Cao Cao's Tomb Management Committee specializing in the protection and utilization of the tomb. Anyang County has also invested more than 10 million yuan in tomb-related infrastructure, farmland compensation and relic collection projects.
Meanwhile, they have also built a temporary exhibition hall and a supporting ring corridor under the principles of building the museum and displaying relics at the original tomb site. They have also used photo, text, audio and video to showcase Cao Cao's life events, expeditions and governance as well as the culture and legends during the Three Kingdoms period
"Shan Jixiang, director of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, recently specified that excavations of Cao Cao's tomb should be accelerated gradually, the quality of the excavations should be enhanced and the planning and protection of Cao Cao's tomb should be promoted on a national level as soon as possible," an official from Anyang said.
