“International Symposium on Silk Road Studies” Held in Ningxia

      International Symposium on Silk Road Studies was opening in Yinchuan, the capital city of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region on August 21, 2009. This symposium was co-sponsored by Chinese Ministry of Culture, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, State Administration of Radio Film and Television, Chinese  National Tourism Administration, Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, and the People’ s Government of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. The Culture Department of Ningxia Autonomous Region, Institute of Archaeology, CASS, Institute of History, CASS, People’s Government of Guyuan City, and Insititute of Heritage and Archaeology, Ningxia Province jointly organized the symposium.

     

         Tao Yufang, Deputy Director-General of the Culture Department of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region chaired the Openning Ceremony, and various leaders and scholars made speeches afterward, including Li Tangtang, Deputy Chair-person of People’s Government of the Autonomous Region; Lu Qiong, Chief of World Heritage Division, State Administration of Cultural Heritage; Du Xiaofan, Commissioner of UNESCO in China; Prof. Bai Yunxiang, Deputy-Director of the Institute of Archaeology, CASS; and Prof. Xu Pingfang, Honorary CASS Member and Senior Researcher of Institute of Archaeology, CASS.
       Nearly hundred scholars of more than 20 various research institutions, museums, universities and publishing houses from China and abroad attended the symposium. The Theme of the conference is Silk Road as the vehicle of cultural exchanges between East and West. Scholars exchanges academic ideas on ethnic, religion, and cultural relics studies along ancient Silk Road from approaches of Archaeology, History, Linguistics, etc.    (Translated by Chen Xi)
