“Protection of Cultural Heritage and Contemporary Chinese Society” forum held in Beijing

     On November 13, 2008, the U.S. Ford Foundation project "Protection of Cultural Heritage and Contemporary Chinese Society" forum was held in Beijing. The meeting was sponsored by the Institute of Archaeology Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (IA CASS), and hosted by Professor Du Jinpeng, the director of the Research Center for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of IACASS. The main participants are the following experts: Chai Xiaoming, deputy director of Cultural Relics Preservation Department of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage; Xu GuangJi, member of the Experts Group in the State Administration of Cultural Heritage; Li Boqian, Beijing University, Yao Zhao, China Cultural Heritage Information Center; Wu Ting-hai,  Tsinghua University; Du Xiaofan, Beijing Office of the UNESCO, Wang Wei and Qi Zhaoye, IACASS, as well as the other 30 experts and scholars coming from the Bureau of Cultural Relics from Henan Province, South-North Water Diversion Office, the Beijing Industry and Technology University, Beijing University, Capital Normal University, Chinese Research Institute of Cultural Heritage etc.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The theme of the meeting was to make a review on the implementation to the Ford Foundation project "Protection of cultural heritage and contemporary Chinese society,".
    On the day of the meeting, the director of IACASS Wangwei introduced the feasibility and the pre-operation to the project, Mr. Wang Xuerong gave an overall proposal to the project and the headers for each subject introduced the implementation plan for their subjects, all the participants made an extensive discussion on the proposal and subjects and exchanged the ideas to the outstanding issues. Many constructive suggestions and guidance were put forward from different perspectives during the meeting. The forum played an active role in promoting the development of the protection of Chinese cultural heritage.
     "Protection of cultural heritage and contemporary Chinese society" is a comprehensive project on the protection of cultural heritage, which presided over by IACASS, joined together by relevant government departments, scientific research institutes, colleges and universities etc. It focus on studying the following subjects: How to effectively protect the ancient ruins and other cultural relics under the current urban construction, new rural construction and large-scale public works construction; How to protect the contemporary and modern industrial cultural heritage with important scientific and historical value under the urban construction and the industrial reform and development; How to take advantage of the ancient and modern cultural heritage in the development of contemporary social; how to deal with the relationship between the protection and the use of the cultural heritage; how to improve the laws and regulations on the protection of cultural heritage so as to make it play the constructive role in protecting and making use of cultural heritage. The project’s target is to explore the win-win strategy for China's economic development and the protection of the cultural heritage so as to provide relevant policy recommendations.
   The project covers five subjects: (1) the implement of national inter-regional major construction projects and the protection of cultural heritage; (2) the ideas, policies and actions of modern urban construction as well as the protection of the ancient city; (3) the ideas, policies and actions of new rural construction as well as the protection of cultural heritage; (4) key issues and strategies to protect "industrial estate"; (5) the promotion and education  of cultural heritage protection.
