Relics dating back 2,700 years found in north China

An area of archeological interest covering around 18 square kilometers was discovered in Xiongan New Area, Hebei Province, local authorities said Tuesday.

The findings date back to the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (770-256 BC) and Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD) and are close to the site of Nanyang, a protected area in Rongcheng County, according to the provincial cultural relics authorities.

The Xiongan New Area is expected to cover around 100 square km initially, and will expand to 200 square km in the mid-term and about 2,000 square km in the long term.

Archaeologists have surveyed the region's mid-term development area since April, identifying 79 sites of interest with 44 new ones.

The three counties of Xiongxian, Rongcheng and Anxin have a long history and the third national archaeological survey showed a total of 189 immovable antiquities in the area.

Hebei Culture Relics Bureau has established a workstation in Xiongan New Area.

Archaeologists will produce a report for review and deliberation by August. A final report will be issued by the end of March 2018.
